The new Channel 4 series Britain’s Railway Empire in Colour explores a fascinating era of industrial expansion. Woodcut Media produced this two-part documentary. It reveals how the railways acted as a tool for the British Empire.
This project marks another successful collaboration between Image Restore and Woodcut Media. I contributed archival restoration and colouring to both episodes of the mini-series. We aimed to bring new clarity to the historical record. Our work helps audiences connect with industrial events that black and white film often obscures.

Engineering the Global Rails
The first episode reveals how steam technology transformed the world. Engineers built vast networks across continents to move goods and people. This expansion drove the growth of the British Empire during the nineteenth century.
We applied specialist restoration to original archival images to highlight these massive engineering feats. This process brings historical railway events into a sharp reality. Seeing these steam engines in colour removes the distance of the past. It shows the grit and scale of the industrial age with newfound clarity.
The Social Impact of the Railway
The second episode explores the human side of the railway story. It features the people who built and operated these complex networks. These stories show the social change driven by the golden age of steam. I ensured the archival materials met the highest broadcast standards for both episodes.
This work required a careful balance of technical skill and historical accuracy. We worked as a specialist team to restore every frame. We captured the atmosphere of the bustling stations and remote outposts. Our restoration work brings these untold stories back to life for a modern audience.
An Ongoing Partnership in Colour
The series has enjoyed international success with pre-sales to SBS Australia. Image Restore values its role as a regular partner on these landmark productions. This work reinforces our reputation for meticulous archival restoration. We meet the rigorous demands of major broadcasters like Channel 4.
